Dover Area School District Takes Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) Seriously for its Students and Staff

Did you know?  Dover Area School District takes Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) seriously for its students and staff.  SCA is the leading cause of death in the US annually, with over 350,000 affected outside hospitals daily. SCA happens to all ages, including more than 7,000 a year, to youths under 18. Every minute that passes without CPR or defibrillation when someone is in SCA decreases their chances of survival by 7-10%.   Dover currently has 35 AEDs located throughout each of its buildings and athletic fields.  Here are some other facts:

  • Each AED at Dover is serviced yearly to ensure it functions appropriately and deploys a strong enough shock to restart a heart.
  • Each elementary school has 2 AEDs located throughout the building.
  • The Middle School has 7 AEDs located throughout the building.
  • The High School has 12 AEDs located throughout the building.
  • Each school has a nurse and several other staff members certified in CPR/AED.
  • The nurses of each building do monthly checks on the AEDs to ensure they are in working order.
  • The Athletic Department has 6 AEDs, located on or within approximately 100 yards of heavily used fields.
  • Dave App, Dover's Athletic Trainer, carries an AED with him when covering events.

As cases of SCA increase in school-aged children, Dover Area School District is doing its part to help save a life!
