NSE Physical Education and Wellness
My name is Tim Schrum and I am the PE/Wellness teacher here at North Salem Elementary. I graduated from Penn State University with my bachelors degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis on teaching. I then attended McDaniel College for graduate school, and received my graduate degree in Athletic Administration. I have been with the Dover Area School District for over ten years. I like teaching PE/Wellness because I can teach the students skills that they will be able to use for the rest of their lives.
In my K-2 curriculum I teach many different skills. I focus on having the students learn basic skills such as throwing, catching, skipping, galloping, hopping, and running. My philosophy is to teach these skills and then have the students use the skills learned in a game setting. I utilize many different lead up games that will get the students ready for the upper grade levels where I teach many different sports and activities.
In my 3rd-6th grade curriculum I teach both team and individual sports and activities. My goal is to teach the students rules, and how to play many different sports or activities. My hope is that the students will take these skills and use them outside of the school setting. We cover sports such as golf, soccer, flag football, handball, basketball, badminton, volleyball, floor hockey and many others.
In 5th grade Wellness we cover many different topics. We have a Drug Education Unit where I teach about topics such as alcohol, tobacco, OTC drugs and prescription drugs. We also do a Nutrition Unit where I cover topics such as MY Plate, Calories, Six Essential Nutrients, Vitamins, Minerals and how exercise can enhance a healthy diet. Another unit I teach is a Body Systems Unit. We take a look at the Skeletal System, Muscular System, Circulatory System and the Nervous System. Finally, fifth grade also gets their first maturity lesson where the class is split into girls and boys and we teach each gender about changes during puberty.
In 6th grade Wellness we also cover quite a few different topics. We have a Drug Education Unit where I teach about topics such as alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, and illegal drugs. Our second unit of the year is our Character Education Unit. We discuss the six traits of having good character. Our third unit focuses on First Aid. We teach the students how to respond to an emergency and what to do in case of emergencies. They also learn how to care for minor cuts, scrapes, and burns. The last unit of the year is our Human Growth and Development Unit. Students will learn about the male and female anatomy and changes that occur during puberty. We also discus and talk about the AIDS virus during this unit.
