The Nursing Services Department functions as part of the Dover Area School District multidisciplinary team and assists students in attaining the highest level of wellness to enhance learning.
The goal for the school district’s healthy child program is to develop responsible and productive citizens with effective lifelong health habits.
The Function of the School Nurse
Health Appraisals and Screening
Conducts State mandated assessments for:
- dental exams: K, 3, 7
- health history and health updates
- hearing testing: K-3, 7, 11
- immunizations compliance
- physical exams: K, 6, 11
- scoliosis: 6,7
- yearly vision testing: K-12
- yearly growth screening & BMI reporting: K-12
Health Promotion and Disease Control
Nursing judgments are made concerning:
- acute and chronic illnesses
- communicable diseases
- school environment
Administers
- emergency first aid
- medications
- routine care
Health Education and Counseling
Provide expertise in:
- agency referral
- A. I. D. S. education and prevention
- asthma
- attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder
- blood donor program
- diabetes
- drug and alcohol education
- human growth and development
- individual health conditions
- nutrition
- pediculosis
- personal hygiene
- pregnancy prevention and education
- sexually transmitted infection education
Assists With Student at Risk
Identifies and refers students for:
- abuse
- academic difficulties
- attendance problems
- domestic violence victimization
- drug and/or alcohol dependency
- homelessness
- mental health issues
- pregnancy
Cares For Medically Fragile Students
Performs nursing procedures for:
- catherization
- glucometer reading
- immunosuppressed student
- inhalation therapy
- organ transplant students
- peak flow monitoring
- seizure precaution
- shunt care
- enteral feeding
School, Home, And Community Liaison
Acts as a resource for:
- community agencies
- disaster readiness
- fire and safety committees
- free lunch program
- health professionals
- multidisciplinary teams
- parents, students and staff
Physical Exams, Dental Exams and Vaccination Requirements
Students in kindergarten, 6th, and 11th grades need to submit completed physical exam reports and students in kindergarten, 3rd , and 7th grades need to submit completed dental exam reports to the school nurse.
Please check the School Vaccination Requirements document below as well as with your health care provider about receiving the required vaccines this summer and submit written proof of immunization to the school nurse in August.
