Welcome to the
Office of the Superintendent
Dear Students, Families, and Community Members -
Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year! The Dover Area School District has a strong vision for students to excel to their full potential. Our mission is to Educate and Empower all learners to shape the 21st Century. And, we mean ALL learners. To achieve this vision, we are working to align our programs, curricula, instruction, services and supports to challenge each student to reach his or her own greatest potential. We believe in “Every Student, Every Day, Whatever it Takes,” and understand that we must support families and provide students with educational opportunities and access, to make this happen.
To achieve this vision, we are proud of our accomplishments last year, and look forward to the challenges that a new school year always brings. During the summer of 2018, after many years of planning, the district broke ground on a brand-new, state of the art high school. This building is specifically designed to allow students to use higher-order thinking skills to problem solve, collaborate with peers, and be flexible in their learning. Next summer, when the “old” high school is remodeled to create the “new” Dover Area Middle School, we will also welcome 6th graders to the Middle School. We understand our responsibility in creating an educational system in our secondary schools that truly prepare students for a growing and constantly changing community, country, and world.
As we move into the new school year, our focus on EVERY student continues. First, each student in the district will have a personal iPad this school year. This will allow teachers to tailor their instruction to the individual needs of students. Assessment of learning will be embedded into the instruction, allowing the teacher to know immediately if a student needs additional support or acceleration on a topic. Additionally, a focus on individual academic and student social/emotional needs continues to be a priority. Teams specifically trained to deal with academic, behavior, and mental health interventions are working very hard in each building. Finally, the work of our newly created District Unity Council moves into year two with the implementation of building-level Unity Councils. These groups will specifically engage students, staff, and parents in conversations and procedures surrounding diversity, bullying, and school culture.
Our schools are very blessed to have strong support from the community. We have wonderful turnouts at sporting events and our many concerts. Local organizations do an amazing job supporting our weekend and summer food programs, as well as scholarships for our high school students as they move on to higher education opportunities. Our Dover Eagle Foundation is extremely active in supporting district and school projects so that the local taxpayer does not take on the additional burden. Finally, many local businesses serve as sites for co-op experiences and internships.
Hopefully, it is evident to all of our stakeholders that we are very proud of our accomplishments, and look forward to the amazing future of the Dover Area School District!
